Senator Savage in the California Legislature

has issued a challenge in the open Senate to fight a duel; not to one but three of his enemies. The question is now raised, Can he be longer considered a Senator? for the Constitution declares,—Section 2 of Article XX: “Any citizen of this state who shall . . . send or accept a challenge to fight a duel, . . . shall not be allowed to hold any office of profit or to enjoy the right of suffrage.” If that applies to Senator Savage he certainly will pay dear for his hot-headedness, as millions of others have in the past. It ought ever to be a prayer on the part of men in trying circumstances for calmness in time of trial.
