Books, Pamphlets, Papers, and Tracts
The American Standard Revised Bible is steadily growing in popular favor. One book-seller, who deals very largely in Bibles, told the writer recently that more than half his Bible sales the past year have been the Standard Revised. This is not strange. Read a few verses: note the beauty and clearness of expression; and then, if you are acquainted with the original, compare, and see how accurately its meaning is set forth in English; e. g., here are the opening verses of the 137th Psalm:— Sorrows of the Exiles in Babylon
1. By the rivers of Babylon,
There we sat down, yea we wept,
When we remembered Zion. 2. Upon the willows in the midst thereof
We hanged up our harps. 3. For there they that led us captive required of us songs,
And they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying,
Sing us one of the songs of Zion. 4. How shall we sing Jehovah’s song
In a foreign land? 5. If I forget thee, O Jerusalem,
Let my right hand forget her skill. 6. Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth,
If I remember thee not;
If I prefer not Jerusalem
Above my chief joy. The publishers of this revision have just issued a cheap edition for class and family use, without references, and bound with cloth. The size is only 4½ x 6 inches, and the price is 60 cents, post-paid. In quantities of ten or more, not prepaid, 50 cents each. It will greatly add to the interest of your family worship hour, if you follow the plan of reading around. A catalog of the regular edition containing references, larger type and better bindings, will be sent free to applicants. The actions taken by the General Conference Publication Committee in regard to prices and discounts have been published, and will be sent free to those desiring them. We have in hand, and will soon publish in the SIGNS OF THE TIMES, a series of articles on Evolution and Geology, by George E. McCready Price, author of “Outlines of Modern Science and Modern Christianity.” This series will be well worth a careful study. We will speak of them more at length at another time. Such is the title of No. 82 of the Apples of Gold Library. It contains many interesting statistics connected with the use and sale of intoxicants; also a courtroom scene, in which the prisoner is charged with murder. This new number also presents, in a very beautiful way, the assurance that our Saviour is able to “save to the uttermost” all who come to Him. It is a 16-page temperance tract of far more than ordinary power and interest. Price 1 cent, or 70 cents per hundred. Ready about June 1. About the first of June we will publish a tract entitled “The Two Covenants,” the price of which will be 1 cent each, or 70 cents a hundred. It will appear as Apples of Gold No. 83. This remarkable tract has passed through more editions than any other library number we have ever issued, and now we are making a new set of plates, as the old ones are nearly worn out through repeated printings. The price remains the same—70 cents a hundred. The circulation of Our Little Friend during the past year has been the greatest in its history, and is actually approaching that of the SIGNS OF THE TIMES, itself. It will celebrate its 15th birthday, which will be July 1, by appearing in a colored cover, with an illustrated poem on the first page. Do you not have some little friend to whom you would like to make a helpful gift? If so, would it not be well to send him Our Little Friend one year, commencing with this special number? Subscription price, 50 cents; with premium book, “Things Foretold,” 75 cents. Pacific Press Publishing Co.
