Closing French Monasteries Sparks Strife

Scenes of strife continue in France in connection with the closing of the monasteries of those Catholic orders which the government has ordered closed. The Catholic peasants are in sympathy with the priests and nuns, and the local officials have not been able to carry out the decree of the government without the support of the military. At Marseilles, La Roche-sur-Yon, Nantes, Landerneau, Annecy, and Versailles, force had to be used by the soldiers in closing the establishments of the orders, and at some of these places conflicts occurred between the people and the military.
