POSSIBILITIES

SCIENTISTS tell us that there is ten times more power in a pound of coal than the best engines of modern times can get out of it. Years ago only one-thirtieth or even less of the coal’s energy could be harnessed and made to do useful work. But inventors have studied diligently to save this great waste, putting each heat-wave in the place where it can do the most work and the most useful work, so at last getting one-tenth instead of one-thirtieth of the power from the fuel.
Not satisfied with this, they are looking forward to the time when the entire force of the coal can be used to turn machinery. The possibility is there; it requires patience and brains to work it out.
And now, while they are working out their problem, let us not lose sight of ours. Undreamed-of possibilities lie wrapped up in our bodies and brains. Shall they yield for us only the “one-thirtieth”? EDISON DRIVER.
