The Law of God and Human Laws
In a recent speech, Mr. Bryan said, “Jefferson did not invent the principles set forth in the Declaration of Independence; he merely stated them in language so apt that the words will always linger in the memory of man.” The same is true of all true principles. Right principles are not of human origin. They are handed down from Him who is the Fountain of all truth, and men who appreciate them take hold of them, and reiterate them. All true principle is embodied in the law of God. A conscientious adherence to this Golden Rule on the part of all would not only settle every difficulty now extant, but it would put a barrier in the way of all difficulty in the future as long as such a condition should continue. There would not arise any antagonism between man and his Creator, or between man and his fellow creatures. “The law of the Lord is perfect;” therefore let it be accepted by all, and no other law is needed. It is only because it is not accepted that compulsory laws become necessary, so that at least some degree of order may prevail. “The precepts of the Lord are right;” “the commandment of the Lord is pure;” “the judgments of the Lord are right;” “in keeping of them there is great reward.” Then what more do people need who accept these principles? It is looking to man as the originator of principles that keeps the world in turmoil and perplexity.
