The Year 1902.

The Literary Digest of January 10 informs us that the year 1902 is “regarded as so remarkable from a physical standpoint by Messrs. Lagrange and Van der Broeck, two Belgian physicists, that at a recent meeting of the Belgian Geological Society they proposed that a scientific commission should be appointed to study the phenomena of the year and their interrelations.” The proposition, we are told by the Revue Scientifique (December 6), was very favorably received. The study is to be extended in these directions: “(1) Seismic phenomena; (2) volcanic phenomena; (3) meteorologic phenomena; (4) magnetic phenomena; (5) solar physics;” and the relation and interrelation of these, if such exists. If this commission shall be appointed, it will not be a surprise to the prophetic student if the year of investigation shall exceed the year investigated in all these phenomena. The earth is “waxed old.”
