Church and Theater

The “Church of the Holy Sepulcher,” in New York, presided over by Rev. W. E. Bentley, the New York Evening Journal of Dec. 8, 1902, tells us, is fitting up its basement with a regular theatrical stage, proscenium arch, scenery, footlights, and all the rest. Regular theatrical troops will there perform, and the pastor is training a company of his own members. As reported, he says: “There should be nothing foreign to the clergyman. When there is, it is because he is not wide-awake.” How different this from our Lord’s teaching: “Ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world.” That church is rightly named “Church of the Holy Sepulcher.” It was said of old by the messenger of light to the women who sought Christ in that veritable sepulcher, “He is not here.”
