Volcanic Eruption in Guatemala

[Since the above came two days ago, the steamer Luxor from Hamburg brings news of renewed activity of the volcano in the Quezaltenango district in Guatemala. She came into San Francisco with thirty tons of sacked volcano ash in her hold, which fell upon the ship to the depth of one foot while taking cargo in San Benito. On the earnest entreaties of the passengers the captain put to sea without clearance papers, the air so filled with ashes that it was almost impossible to see at all. All the cattle, it is said were destroyed for 400 miles around. A cable despatch from Lisbon, states that a severe earthquake has been felt at Guarda, Portugal, and elsewhere, and that serious loss of life and the destruction of many houses are reported. [Ed.
