Seismic Disturbances

Serious loss of life is reported from the province of Beira, Portugal, due to an earthquake shock which occurred on November 6. Many dwellings were destroyed. Severe earthquake shocks have been causing much alarm in Adelaide, Australia, and adjacent towns. Much property is reported destroyed by the temblors. Experts declare that it would have required but little more force to have destroyed the city. A lighthouse at Troubridge collapsed, burying the keeper in the ruins. The steamer Luxor, which called at a port in southern Mexico on her way to San Diego recently, was compelled to put to sea without waiting for her papers on account of the heavy smoke and ashes from a volcano far inland. It is thought that many near the volcano must have perished. Fully 100,000 mules, cattle, and sheep are reported to have perished in the recent eruption of Santa Maria, Guatemala. A violent eruption of Colima volcano in Mexico is threatened, and the inhabitants are fleeing from the vicinity. The government buildings, the wharves, and nearly all the business part of the town of Ocos, Mexico, are reported to be now under water, and continuing to sink. The sinking has been going on since the earthquake shocks of last April.
