Venezuelan Warship Misuses American Flag

It has come to the knowledge of the State Department that the Venezuelan war ship which recently sailed up the Orinoco River and bombarded the city of Bolivar, sailed under the American flag until within range of the city, in order to be free from molestation by the insurgents on the way. The bombardment of the city resulted in many deaths and the destruction of considerable property. The American minister demanded an apology and a salute to the American flag. The demand was complied with, a salute of twenty-one guns fired, and the incident is regarded as closed. Two more American warships have been ordered to the isthmus to assist in guarding American interests.
