THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT.

LIFE is given by God, and therefore none but God has a right to take it. We see a particular sacredness in human life in the fact that it is created in the image of God, and, therefore every one has a right to possess that life as long as God permits, or until duly forfeited by law for the safety of other lives. Many an undutiful and wrong-doing son may kill his parents by the vileness of his life. Many a wife has been killed by the coldness and brutality by the infidelity and intemperance of her husband. Those things kill as surely, if not as quickly, as poison, pistol, or the knife, and they who thus kill are in every sense of the word murderers and violators of this commandment. Christ declared that whoever has hate in his heart is a murderer. He has the root of murder in his heart, liable at any time and under any provocation to break forth and kill. How needful, therefore, the command to love our neighbor as ourselves. He who habitually does so will never be guilty of an infraction of the sixth commandment.—Christian Work.
