Beauty versus Worth

The wise man says: “Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman that fears the Lord, she shall be praised.” Prov. 31:30. It has always been so. A contemporary points out the fact that most of the wives in divorce cases in “high society” in recent years have been beautiful women, and mentions not less than eleven of such by name; and the thought is expressed in the accompanying article that these women, as girls, were petted, and flattered, and praised, till they became so selfish that they made the lives of their husbands miserable. Presumably, their husbands were often of the same coming up. On the other hand, is mentioned the fact that often very plain women with strong, loving hearts win and hold the affections of men of the same stamp which their beautiful sisters lose. There are two old proverbs well to remember: “Beauty is but skin deep,” and “Handsome is that handsome does.” The most beautiful lives are the most unselfish and helpful.
