Proverbs 31:30

Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.

The woman who fears the LORD shall be praised, and her own works furnish the ground of that praise. The works that bring this praise are diligent care for her household and help extended to the poor.

The God-fearing woman to be praised is the one fitted for the true sphere of wife and mother, as head of the family and useful member of society. Her praise rests on thorough knowledge of household duties and domestic labor, not on painting, fancy work, music, cube root, figures of rhetoric, or talk about woman's elevated sphere and rights. Fearing the LORD means learning the mysteries of the kitchen, how to cut, make and mend clothing, and how to prepare food in a wholesome and palatable manner. It means beginning at nine or ten years old to take a regular share in household duties and to be held responsible for the work done.

It means doing washing on the rubbing-board, sweeping, dusting, and kitchen and garden work as valuable exercise, in place of croquet, archery, dancing and other profitless amusements. It also means being competent to preside as a queen in her own domain, to guide and instruct children, to direct servants, and if need be to minister with her own hands to the wants of the household. It means understanding the mechanism of the human body and the principles of hygiene, diet and dress, labor and recreation, and the best methods of treating disease, so she can care for her own children in sickness instead of leaving them to stranger nurses and physicians. Well-educated graduates with honors who are ignorant of these practical duties are shamefully ignorant and destitute of the qualifications necessary for the regulation of a family, fall far below the true sphere of woman, and by inefficiency wreck the happiness of families without number.
