“MODERN CHRISTIANITY AND MODERN SCIENCE.”
By Editor
THAT long-delayed book, “Outlines of Modern Christianity and Modern Science,” by George E. McCready Price, is now ready. We are sure that many of our readers have been waiting anxiously for it, but on account of a rush of other work the delays have been unavoidable. As will appear from the following summary of the chapters, it is a book that every intelligent Bible student ought to have:— Chapter I., “The Terms Defined.”—Old-fashioned Christianity versus the Speculations of Evolution. Chapter II., “Divine Immanence.”—Shows how a thousand things in the inorganic as well as in the organic world unite to testify that natural phenomena are not due to inherent properties imparted by the Creator to matter; but that the Bible, Science, and common sense alike declare that the Great First Cause is actively present in every movement of nature. Jehovah has not delegated His power to the molecules and atoms. Chapter III., “Scientific World Building.”—Shows what crude guess-work the Nebular Hypothesis has always been. “It talks about things beyond our knowledge, which often seems the same as talking wisdom.” The solar system was doubtless formed in some beautiful and regular way, but we have not yet discovered the “law,” nor even the process,—nor are we likely to do so very soon. Indeed, recent manifestations in stellar regions intimate that worlds and systems can be produced by the Architect of the Skies in a few days, instead of a few million æons. Chapter IV., “Molten, tho Rigid.”—Here begins the study of Geology, which is a leading feature of the book. This chapter shows how “modern analysis tends to the conclusion that our world is solid throughout;” and discusses the causes of earthquakes and volcanoes. Chapter V., “Geological Guessing.”—In a way perhaps never attempted before, this chapter shows the way in which the geological theories have been built up. This chapter alone is worth many times the price of the book. It really marks a new era in the history of this science. Chapter VI., “Biblical Geology.”—Shows that modern discoveries in Geology are all tending to demonstrate that one tremendous world-catastrophy—the Deluge—will explain the facts of the fossil rocks far better than a century of ingenious guessing has ever done. Chapter VII., “Despairing Darwinism.”—Outlines in very readable style the “modern scientific civil war” over the details of Darwin’s theory. The recent archeological discoveries in Crete, etc., are also dwelt upon. Chapter VIII., Some Moral Aspects of the Evolution Theory.”—Showing how contrary to the Gospel of Christ is the doctrine of progress through human evolution. Chapter IX., “Evolution and the World Problems.”—Shows how evolutionary ideas are nursing into life a religio-political despotism—the great oppressing and persecuting power of the last days. Altogether, we feel sure that this book must have a wide circulation, because it is so much needed at the present day. No Bible worker, no Christian, can afford to do without it. It has nearly 300 well-packed pages, and its price is only 75 cents.
