Conscription and the British Army

THE serious falling off in enlistments in the British army has caused a revival of the talk of conscription. Many whose term of enlistment in the South African war had expired are walking the streets of London seeking employment, but showing no sign of a desire to re-enlist. The Saturday Review frankly admits that the army is too small for the requirements of the empire, and then declares: “Whether we like it or not, conscription is bound to come, and the country might as well get used to the idea as quickly as it can.”
