From Moses to Jesus at Jordan

JORDAN marked the end of the special mission of Moses; it marked the beginning of the mission of Jesus. The work of Jesus began where the work of Moses ended. The law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." John 1:17. From Moses, a man, men could get only the law, the form, that which condemns. Moses himself looked to Christ, and obtained the grace and truth of the law. So did Joshua, Caleb, and others. But many then, and so even now, persisted in putting man between themselves and God, and so shut away the grace and truth, and received only law, naked, condemning, with no power to save. Moses could do no more than bring them to see their hopeless condition. But Jesus meets man in the lowest condition, and lifts him to righteousness and life and power. His baptism in Jordan, the descending and abiding Spirit, the Voice of the Father's approval, comes still with gracious and blessed assurance to every soul who would indeed be a follower of Jesus Christ our Lord.
