For the Silence of the Novelist

“For the Silence of the Novelist.”—A prominent English novelist expresses his opinion that it would be “a matter of small moment if no more novels were written for the next fifty years.” More than this, it would be a great blessing. The young and the youth are feeding upon a mental pabulum which is making mental dyspeptics, mental inebriates, mental and moral contortionists, mental and physical degenerates and lunatics. The same Literary Digest which speaks of this, has an article lamenting the decline of historical writing in literary value. And there is less reading of history, less heeding of its tremendous lessons.
