ATTITUDE TOWARD SPIRITISM.
The fifty-fourth anniversary of “Modern Spiritualism” is in the recent past. Among the addresses was one by Dr. George H. Brooks, a noted Spiritist of Milwaukee, who referred to the increased tolerance now shown toward Spiritualists by the churches. Upon this the Christian Advocate truly remarks:— If the churches are showing any indulgence to Spiritualism, it is a religious thermometer which exhibits with two tubes, one of which shows the indulgence toward Spiritualism by a rising in the tube, and the other the decline of faith in Christianity, which sinks in this tube exactly in proportion to the rise in the other. And the reason for the manifest tolerance and inclination toward Spiritism is the anti-scriptural doctrine held by the churches concerning the nature of man. If the churches stood in the light, if the Satanic doctrine (Gen. 3:3, 4) of the immortality of the soul were repudiated, if it could see that the only hope for those who sleep in death is the resurrection, there would be no hook for Satan to hang his false theory upon. But the great mass seem more willing to retain the error and let in its whole brood of soul-destroying falsehoods, than to accept of the humiliating truth, to the carnal man, that he is mortal, and can live forever only by embracing the righteousness and life of Christ.
