THE LOVE THAT SHIELDS.

He had fallen, the patriarch grand, Who had faced the world alone, In his tent, apart, in his shame he lay, None to make moan.
One came with mocking mien, With careless step passed by, To whisper with scorn the bitter tale Of misery.
With flout and jesting he; In silence, with heads bowed low, Two brothers ponder in pitying grief The father's woe.
With averted gaze they press To his side in tender ruth, His shield their love, his stay the strength Of their glorious youth.
O, blessed, tender type Of the Love Divine that came To the hopeless human soul to hide Its grief and shame.
O, wondrous lesson sent For our hearts, to censure given, Of the Love that pities, shields, uplifts, That wins to heaven.
