Churches and Saloons in New York

The next time you hear complaint of the cost of maintaining churches, just remind the complainer of the following facts, taken from the Christian Work: “In the City of New York there are 114 Protestant churches, chapels, and places of worship of every kind in that part of the city below 14th street, and 4,065 liquor saloons. The worst part of the tenement population lives here, and it has the worst half of the saloons. Uptown the account stands somewhat better, but there are easily ten saloons to every church, and the congregations at these saloons are larger, and the attendance steadier, and the contributions far more liberal all the year round, Sunday included, than at any of the churches.”
