CONDITIONS IN AUSTRIA.

The cry of “away from Rome,” and the work which goes with it, seem to be gaining impetus in Austria. The last quarterly report issued by the leaders in that movement indicates that the ratio of conversions is steadily increasing. This is also indicated by the fact that vigorous efforts are now being put forth by the Catholic clergy to check the movement. Recently the entire body of the Catholic clergy of Austria united in a warning to the Catholic laity against this movement. It is certain that Austria, where Catholicism has so long held almost undisputed sway, is being stirred as never before. If this shall result in a sincere turning to God, and a desire to know and do His will on the part of those who are coming out, the movement will do good. But if it is simply a coming out from the fold of Rome, and a coming into the fold of a Protestantism that is such only in name, having forgotten the principles of true Protestantism as they are being forgotten to-day in our own land, then the movement is accomplishing but little.
