Empress Dowager Extends Protection to Christians

THE empress-dowager has begun to make her presence felt in the Chinese Government again. She has degraded several Boxer officials, and has recently issued an edict in reference to foreign and native Christians and their rights in China. By this edict protection is extended to all Christians, both foreign and native. Her two chief counselors are said to be men who respect the foreigners simply for the power they have attained, and who will advise the acceptance of only those foreign ideas and inventions which will put China on a footing equal with the foreign nations.
