Church and State in the Philippines
Archbishop Chapelle, who has but recently returned from the Philippines, has this to say of the prospects in the islands: “I am convinced that, under the guidance of President Roosevelt, who is a man believing that the Decalogue holds good in politics as well as in private life, we shall find a solution to these problems. The church will be reorganized according to the necessities of the new conditions, the people will become prosperous, and we will bring peace, order, and liberty to that immense archipelago, the key to the Orient.” This is a piece of the same sophistry which that organization has always employed to induce the State to do its bidding. To what extent it will succeed in this, the future will reveal—but the Word of God has already revealed it, and they who wish to know can know before the thing is accomplished.
