AN EVIL WORK.

THERE is nothing surprising nor unaccountable in the published statement that some liquor dealers in a Western city have been discovered in a deliberate attempt to awaken an appetite for strong drink among young boys in their neighborhood by dealing out confectionery doctored with alcohol. Such a scheme is in perfect harmony with the spirit and character of the liquor business always and everywhere. Considerations of right, justice, decency, purity, are not to be found in the program of the saloon. To sell drink, at whatever cost to individuals or to communities in misery, suffering, and sorrow, is the one object of the rumseller’s existence. It is for the right to do this that he pays his license, and why should he not have the worth of his money? He is authorized by law to scatter poison and death, and why should he be blamed for doing that which the people through their government have told him that he may do?—Christian Work.
