French Catholic Associations and the Law

The law recently passed by the French Government dealing with the various Catholic associations, and requiring that they publish the rules of their societies and furnish reasonable guarantees that their funds are not applied to purposes they do not care to avow, has been recognized by less than one-third of the associations. The rest are unwilling to face the test, and this is regarded by the advocates of the law as a proof that the law is a good one. The orders which oppose the law are strenuously opposed to the supremacy of the secular republic, and can not bring themselves to surrender the cherished principle of the supremacy of the canonical law.
