The Love of Money

It is not money that is “the root of all evil,” or “a ‘root of all kinds of evil,’” as the Revised Version better puts it. It is not the making of money, nor the possession of money, nor the use of money of itself, that is a root of evil. It is “the love of ‘money’” that is evil. And the love of money is just as bad in a poor man as in a rich; just as bad in the employee as in the employer, just as bad in the homes of the dwellers in the East End of London as in the West End; just as bad in the Bowery in New York as on Fifth Avenue. It is the motive, the intent, the idolatry of the thing which makes it evil. Men who love it and possess it will, if necessary, oppress men to get more. Men who love it, but do not have it, will hate and oppose those who possess it. All these strike difficulties would be very easily settled, if it were not for the love of money. The only thing that will effectually root it out is the love of Jesus Christ, and the love of the riches of His grace.
