Exports.

The advance reports of the Treasury Department of the United States show that the exports for the year will exceed a billion and a half. That is an increase of $110,000,000 over the preceding fiscal year, and during the last five years the exports of the country have about doubled. These figures are held up as a great evidence of prosperity. They should be pointed to as a danger signal. By far the greater part of the profits from this immense commerce goes into the coffers of a few big trusts, and the people generally are benefited but a comparatively small sum. The result is a widespread feeling of bitterness that will soon burst into flames that will rapidly consume all this appearance of prosperity. This is no theory; it is a statement of facts. The great and final crisis in the world's history is right at hand; we should not be deceived by superficial appearances; we should look at things as they really are.
