Denmark’s Conditions for the Islands’ Sale

In the matter of the proposed sale of the Danish West Indies to the United States, Denmark has made several conditions. Among these is the condition that in case of sale to the United States, the inhabitants become at once not only subjects, but citizens of the United States; also that the products of the islands shall be admitted to the ports of the United States free of duty. It seems somewhat humiliating to an American that America should have to be taught the first principles of liberty by the ruler of a monarchy.
