The State and the Church.

The State is an organization for the government of the world. The church is an organization for the furtherance of the work of salvation. The union of the two is a mingling of common and sacred things. The Lord says, “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers” 2 Cor. 6:14. The church and the State are unequal—the one is moved by the power of love, the other by the power of force. Love can not be enforced.
