Catholic Interests in the Peace Commission
It is worthy of note that involved in the questions between Spain and the United States the Roman Catholic Church has large interests, many of which under true American principles would be wholly ignored as not belonging to civil questions. It is also worthy of note that of the peace commissioners, the five Spanish are all Roman Catholics; and Justice White, of Louisiana, one of the American commissioners, is also a Catholic, the appointment of whom, “it is freely declared,” says the New York Examiner, “was due to the efforts of Archbishop Ireland.” “The fact that his appointment so quickly followed Archbishop Ireland’s trip to the capital, is, however, unpleasantly suggestive.” It is safe to say that the Catholic Church will not be made to suffer.
