Freedom from the Golden Calf
Jehu, king of Israel, destroyed in his “zeal for the Lord” the cruel and tyrannical Baal-worshipers, and then turned the kingdom over to the scarcely less wicked bondage of the golden calves. The “Christian nation” of the United States in its “zeal for the Lord” has freed certain islands of the West Indies from the oppression of Spanish rule; and this is good; but it veritably looks as tho she were about to turn them over to the sordid greed of the golden-calf worshipers, the great soulless corporations, the wealth of which is exceeded only by their greed. An immense corporation has been organized under the laws of New Jersey—American Indies Company, capital $18,000,000—for the purpose of building, making, and operating all sorts of electric plants and apparatus for the public, gas plants, mines, railways, mineral and oil properties, steamships, and all other means of conveying passengers, freight, or mail, manufacturing ice, and developing all sanitary arrangements, and in fact having authority to construct, to operate, to control everything which can be controlled by a great trust. The hope of physically free Cuba and Porto Rico lies in the probability that there will be more than one of these corporations, and that the public may benefit by their competition. How much we talk of free men; but the simple, ultimate fact remains that he only is free whose soul and heart and mind are free! But this freedom can only come through Jesus Christ; for “whom the Son makes free is free indeed.” Send the Gospel to Cuba, the true proclamation of peace.
