What May Be Expected.

The Catholic Mirror of July 2, in referring to the report that a noted Englishman, Mr. John Morley, had become a Catholic (a report now denied by Mr. Morley), says that this “should be nothing surprising, for many other Englishmen and English women, of all spheres and degrees, are going over, and among the latest to do so not very long ago was Chief Justice Hawkins. Indeed, there have been reports about the queen herself.” The Mirror remarks that “it is men of intellect, such as Mr. Morley, whom the Catholic Church may be expected to win at last, if they can be brought to listen.” And this is true on the part of unconverted men. The Roman Catholic religion is the most natural religion for the natural man that ever existed. In the acceptance of the true religion, “intellect” is not a safe guide. It is the humble heart and the simple faith which discerns truth which the haughty, intellectual, natural man never will see. Many men of intellect, ignorant of God’s Word, busy in the world, will accept of Roman Catholicism, because it presents the natural, easy way of the unregenerate heart.
