The Temperance Congress

At this writing the Temperance Congress is in session at Prohibition Park, Staten Island, near New York. This congress this year deals with a broad subject, and is seeking to unite the various temperance forces of the country, especially upon three lines of work, educatory, prohibitory, and moral suasion. The educational efforts are to be put forth among teachers, Sunday-school and public school, universities and colleges, life insurance companies, physicians, clergymen, army officers, etc. The congress seems to be purely temperance, having left out all references to religio-political matters, such as Sunday-closing and Sunday laws, which are but a subterfuge at best. Certainly there is need of earnest work in the great temperance cause.
