“WHEN RELIGIOUS LAWS ARE NEEDED.”
A BRIGHT new paper, the American Banner, of Philadelphia, emblazons forth to the world these words:— “A man-made religion always requires man-made laws to support and protect it. The religion of God—true Christianity—never has and never will ask for civil laws in its favor. It could not do it except by denying the principles of the Christian religion. Christianity has not flourished because of human laws, but in spite of them. If civil government protects the individual in his right to worship God according to the dictates of his own conscience, it will have performed all that is ever required of it in regard to religion.” And the government should give also equal protection to him who does not worship at all. It does this, however, for the sake of men, not because of religion. As long as the Banner gives to the world such truths, may it wave prosperously.
