California Crop Prospects
Crop prospects in California this year are far from flattering. In some portions of the State, where the crops depend upon rain, they are a total failure. Many head of cattle and sheep have been moved eastward or to mountainous districts to keep them from starving. Men have longed and longed for rain, but the year has been remarkably dry, almost no rain having fallen for months. The crops which thus far have suffered most are grain, hay, and pasture feed. In some parts of the State there will be fair fruit crops; and if the irrigating reservoirs hold out, the irrigated sections will not greatly suffer; yet there must be much suffering during the next year. It will be a year which will call for self-denial and Christian sacrifice, and broad philanthropy to help the needy and unfortunate.
