Ever Increasing

The Scientific American Supplement says that “thirty years ago no gun exceeding five tons in weight was worked on the deck of a ship, or was considered capable of being so worked. To-day guns weighing 110 tons are loaded and manipulated on ship-board, through hydraulic agencies, with the greatest ease. Muzzle-loaders have been superseded by breech-loaders, and power and range are ever increasing.” Thus the power and efficiency of the cannon has been increased twenty-two fold in the last thirty years. Certainly there is a good foundation from more standpoints than one for the statements from General Miles found in another paragraph.
