DENYING SELF.

“Deny thyself,” the Saviour said, “If thou wouldst follow after Me;” Take up the cross that Jesus bore; The life He lives He’ll live in thee.
Denying self is not to go On some hard pilgrimage of pain, ’Tis not to torture flesh and blood, That we may thereby favor gain.
’Tis this: O, let me tell it clear, ’Tis just what Jesus said it was When He upon that awful night Told Peter He’d forsake His cause!
To Peter on that night He said, Thrice, Me erelong thou wilt deny: Whatever therefore Peter did, With Jesus’ words will well comply.
What then did Peter on that night, In his denial of the Lord? ’Twas this: he said, “I know him not,” And cursed and swore to prove his word.
Not knowing Him he thus denied The suffering One so long ago. So, if we would ourselves deny, ’Tis sinful self we will not know.
Go, then, ye followers of the Man, Deny yourselves, know Him alone; He is your strength, your life, your all; In knowing Him ye shall be known.
