FAITH

BY H. L. HOBART.
Faith is not a belief of propositions. If it were, what a Christian the devil would be! He probably knows more of the truth than many Christians; and he believes what he knows; but this is not true evangelical faith. It is not confidence in ourselves and in the perfection of our creeds, our feelings, and our actions. The old Pharisees had that. So had the world-renowned Diotrephes. It is not presumption. Presumption takes for granted what God has not promised; faith rests on his word.
Faith is confidence, or, rather, it is confiding in a personal being. To believe in God necessarily implies that we believe about him. Faith recognizes moral character. Faith in God honors him, and enlists his almighty faithfulness in our behalf. Unbelief dishonors and insults him, and leaves us, helpless and hopeless, to our ruin. “Have faith in God.”
