Scoffers and the Prophecies of the Last Days

“These are great days for Adventists. Ominous war clouds darken the European sky, but throw light on the prophecies, and enable the prophets of to-day to interpret them in accordance with their pre-millennial creed. How patient and persistent they are, year after year, studying and figuring, interpreting and prophesying!”—N. Y. Independent.
If Noah could wake up and read that paragraph, it would no doubt sound quite familiar to him. He must have heard a great deal of such scoffing during the 120 years in which he was engaged in warning the people of the coming judgment, and preparing “an ark to the saving of his house.” And the Lord reminds us that “as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” Peter also enjoins us to “be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour; knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.” Again he shows that this scoffing is against the mercy of the Lord: “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering to usward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
