POPE FAWNING.

The trend of opinion and action among some of our religious leaders is as significant as it is remarkable. Here is Dr. Parker writing an affectionate letter of adoration to the pope, addressing him as “Holy Father,” “Your Holiness,” and stating, with reference to the much-vexed question of reunion, that, “if this were a mere personal matter, I could hardly forgive myself for seeking to approach a presence so august and so venerable”—and so on. Since then Dr. Lunn has actually gone “to beard the lion in his den,” as a representative of British Nonconformity. The aged Italian ecclesiastic, however, refused to receive his visitor as president of the Reunion Conference, and so Dr. Lunn out-poped the pope by replying that he would not, therefore, interview him in his personal capacity. But there seems to be a lot of pope fawning to-day.
