A New Heart for the Old Law

A DISCIPLE brother, writing us a courteous and kindly letter, says, “We read in the Prophets that God would give us a new law, and that should be written in their hearts.” The brother evidently refers to Jer. 31:31–34, but he has misplaced his adjective. The prophet does not predict a new law, but a new heart, in which God through the new covenant would write the same eternal law. The fault was never with the law; that was and is spiritual, holy, perfect, just, and good; the fault was with the carnal heart. See Ps. 19:7; Rom. 7:12, 14; 8:7. With the new heart the old law is a delight. Ps. 40:7, 8.
