EVENING MEDITATION.

BY L. H. CHRISTIAN.
WHEN in quiet of evening all nature is hushed, And solitude reigns over all, And the cares of the day that were hurried and rushed Are past as the dark shadows fall,—
Then the soul undisturbed with its God can commune, Lifted high as the stars where they shine; Then the heart seems to chord with a heavenly tune To melodies truly divine.
For about us all nature—the temple of God— Is still in the silence of prayer; Her voices are hushed, her feet are unshod, While she bows in the cool, dewy air.
And the moon pours a flood of her soft, silver light Like a chanting of song o’er the land, Which enraptures the soul in a sense of delight As from echoes of music most grand.
There is naught so ennobling, so heavenly sweet, As to meditate then on the Lord; There is nothing which brings in a joy so complete As in silence to think on his word.
