THE SEVENTH DAY OF THE WEEK.

The seventh-day Sabbath is the seventh day of the week. The week exists because of the Sabbath. God’s rest is the origin of the septenary cycle. The commandment expressly declares that “the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God.” This does not mean any seventh day, but the seventh day of the cycle, or week. For proof of this take the following scripture:—
“In the end of the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week.” Matt. 28: 1.
“And when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had brought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulcher at the rising of the sun.” Mark 16: 1, 2.
“And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the Sabbath day according to the commandment. Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulcher.” Luke 23: 56; 24: 1.
It will be seen by the above that the first day of the week came immediately after the Sabbath; and therefore the Sabbath day is the day just before the first day of the week; but the day just before the first day of the week is the seventh day of the week. Therefore the Sabbath of the Lord is the seventh day of the week. That day now is the time between Friday evening at sunset and Saturday evening at sunset. It was the day hallowed by Christ, the Creator, in Eden, kept by patriarchs and prophets, and magnified and made honorable by the holy obedience of Jesus Christ, our Example. God asks nothing of man that he is not anxious to clearly reveal.
