The Women Walk to the Tomb at DawnBible World

Luke 23:56

And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.

The women who loved Jesus watched where he was laid, and because the Sabbath was pressing close they left his burial unfinished, prepared spices and ointments beforehand, then set that loving work aside to rest. While he lay in the tomb through the Sabbath hours, his disciples waited behind closed doors in lonely grief, and the women waited until the first day of the week to return, with no thought that he would rise. In resting on the Sabbath according to the commandment after his death, they kept the seventh day, Saturday, in obedience and showed that the commandment was still binding and not abolished. Not even their care for Jesus led them to work on that day, and Christ himself resting in the tomb on the Sabbath while rising on the first day did not make that day the Sabbath or change the commandment.

Burial Setting and Actions

The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed to the burial place on the preparation day as the Sabbath drew on, and saw the tomb and how His body was laid. They came near and watched as His body was placed in the tomb, then lingered there in grief, and their staying shows their devotion and care in witnessing where He was laid. The burial was hurried because the Sabbath was near, so the work of preparing His body could not be completed before it began. Before the Sabbath the women prepared spices and ointments to anoint and embalm His body for burial, then set them aside and paused that caring work until after the Sabbath.

They kept the Sabbath and waited for its hours to pass, then went to the tomb early on the first day of the week with the spices to anoint Him and to continue preparing and embalming His body for burial. During that same Sabbath the disciples spent the time lonely and sick at heart behind closed and fastened doors while grieving His death. At that time He lay in the tomb and rested there through the Sabbath before His resurrection. When they prepared to return to the tomb, the women did not expect Him to rise from the dead.

Sabbath Kept After Death

After his death his followers rested on the Sabbath day according to the commandment, in obedience to it. The women rested on the seventh day after preparing spices and ointments for his burial, and the seventh day is Saturday, not Sunday. The burial was hurried because the Sabbath was near, so the work of preparing his body could not be completed before it began. While grieving his death the disciples rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.

They had prepared spices and ointments to embalm his body, but because he was buried on Friday they set them aside and waited until the Sabbath had passed. Even this work of care for Jesus did not lead them to work on the Sabbath. Their keeping of it shows that the Sabbath commandment remained binding after his death and was honored by his disciples, rather than being treated as changed or abolished.

Christ himself rested in the tomb through that Sabbath before his resurrection. His rising on the first day did not make that day a Sabbath nor change the Sabbath commandment.
