Sunday Closing and Temperance.

That Sunday closing would affect the sale of liquor on that day is undoubtedly true. That it would lead many to drink more is undoubtedly true. They will purchase it the day before, and drink it in private places with boon companions on Sunday. But Sunday closing restrains the saloon only on one day; it exalts it to an honorable business the other six days in the week. The only legitimate temperance law is prohibition seven days in the week.
And those who support the movement on the ground of temperance will find that when Sunday closing of saloons is won, the temperance question will be relegated to the background, and a stricter Sunday law will be demanded. The temperance claim is only a subterfuge, which is needlessly deceiving many.
