Luther's Advice to Preachers on Simple Sermons

MARTIN LUTHER gave some good advice to a preacher of the gospel, which is not altogether out of date:— “Let all thy sermons be of the simplest. Look not to the princes; but to the simple, unwise, rude, and unlearned people; for the prince is made of the same stuff. If I, in my sermons, were to regard Philip Melanchthon and the other doctors, I should do no good; but I preach in the simplest way to the unlearned, and that pleases all. (I keep the Hebrew and the Greek for the times when we learned men are alone together. Then we can talk such crabbed stuff they may well wonder at us in Heaven).”
