Coals of Fire.

A CORRESPONDENT writes: In Martin’s French Version, old edition, Prov. 25: 22 reads—“For thou shalt take up coals of fire from his head.” The new edition reads—“For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head,” and the same difference in the two editions of Rom. 12:20. The French of Osterwald is like the new of Martin’s. Which is correct?
Ans. The reading of the new edition is correct. Our translation of Rom. 12:20 follows the Greek. The Septuagint is the same as our version and Martin’s new edition on Prov. 25: 22. The difference of versions arose probably from the fact that the Hebrew verb signifies to take up, but in this text it carries the accessory idea of to heap upon, and this of necessity, for the word upon is in the Hebrew text; of course the word from is not there.
