Bro. Ellis remained at Dodge Center, and labored privately during the week, and held Sabbath meetings, while I was at home, from Aug. 9 to Sept. 4. Bro. H. W. Decker, from Wisconsin, spent one Sabbath with him, to the edification of all.
When I returned, I found him at Wasioja, with the tent pitched, and meetings begun, with a small interest. This place is about five miles from Dodge Center. It is the head-quarters of the Wesleyan church in the West, their denominational school being located here. They occupy the Seminary for both church and school purposes. They have five or six ministers in and around the town.
It is evident that the stay-away argument has been employed quite successfully by the shepherds of the flocks, the attendance on our meetings ranging from thirty to seventy-five. The evenings being cool, and there being a good town hall, open to all religious meetings, we took down the tent after a few days and now occupy the hall. We have just entered upon the Sabbath question, and there seems to be an increase of interest. Some are candidly investigating. Seven have united with the Dodge Center church, and we think that several more will do so at the next quarterly meeting.
After we left Dodge Center the ministers began to preach upon the Sabbath and immortality questions. A stranger, claiming no connection with any religious body, who was giving lectures at the school-house in town, was invited into one of the churches to lecture upon the immortality of the soul. I listened to him, and gave notice that I would review his discourse if I could have the use of the church. The next day the trustees offered me the house if I would use it while the lecturer was there. I accepted, and spoke one evening, reviewing a part of the discourse, when the house was closed against me. We think this will result in helping some who were wavering to decide for the truth.
We shall probably remain here till after the October quarterly meeting and fully organize the church. Our hearts are made glad, and our courage is increased, by the reports from all over the wide field. May the Lord speed on the message.
D. P. Curtis.
