Editorial Note on Dr. Tombes and the Sabbath

NOTE.—In a recent issue of the SIGNS we noticed that Dr. Tombes, a well-known Baptist minister of California, had promised to write on the Sabbath, to give his reasons for believing that the Sabbath of the fourth commandment was not the Sabbath of creation. We have seen his first article. Those who have some time been readers of the SIGNS will remember that we republished two articles from Dr. Tombes on “the Hebrew Tah-val,” being a criticism of Dr. Young’s definition of that word. Those articles were worthy of the commendation we gave them, and gave evidence of the ability of Dr. Tombes as a scholar and reasoner. As relevant to this subject which we are now canvassing we will review his article, probably next week. It is a pleasure to review the arguments of candid, scholarly men, and we believe that Dr. Tombes is such. Of course when he opposes the Sabbath he cannot do justice to himself.
