Civilized Barbarity

THE savage Indian goes about with the scalps of his victims hanging to his belt. The civilized white goes about with the scalps of her victims “adorn-ing” her dress. The victims of the former are men, and those of the latter are birds; but considering the difference in station and educational advantages, can we say that the Indian is the more heartless of the two? Civilized barbarity is to our minds the worst form possible; and there is a good deal of the savage still remaining among civilized people.
